156 people were killed and 196 were injured in Itaewon Seoul, as crowds surged into a narrow alley to celebrate Halloween. So how was this ever possible. Whilst this alley in Itaewon was completely crowded and people could not move at all, it is alleged that those on the higher slope of the alley shouted “Just push them all!” Along with this, people fell like dominoes, and those at the bottom side of the alley were squeezed with people piling on top of them. Some people at first thought it was a Halloween prank. As the situation got serious, police and ambulances arrived, but remember, the entire area was crowded making it near impossible for those to reach to rescue within time. The tragedy occurred with many suffering from a heart attack and of the casualties, 101 were women and 55 were men.26 were foreign casualties, from Iran, China, the US, Japan, France, Australia, Norway, Vietnam, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Austria and Russia. Whilst there has been controversy over the Korean government’s reaction to the incident, such as joking at the press conference discussing the tragedy, I would like to share the deep sorrow that Koreans have for the tragedy and hope that the victims rest in peace.
