MMIWG2S FINAL

MMIWG2S FINAL

In 2019, the Senate officially made May 5th as the National Day of Awareness for MMIWG2S, Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirits. On this day we honor those we have lost and those we are still looking for. We honor the family and friends who are mourning their presence. We honor their life and pray for their journey. Statistics: 4 out of 5 women (84%) have experienced violence in their lifetime. 56.1% women have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime. 55.5% women have been physically abused by their intimate partner 48.8% have been stalked in their lifetime. Native women are twice as likely to be experience violence and rape than Anglo-American white women. 3x’s higher to be murdered than Anglo-American white women. 5,712 cases of missing native women and girls and the US Department of Justice has only reported 116 cases. We need awareness regarding this epidemic. We need resources for our Reservations. We need a system that records data of the MMIP and an improved investigative response, all of which require resources. In 2020, The Savanna’s act was adopted into law to review, revise, and develop policies and protocols to address these cases. In 2021, Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland (Laguna Pueblo), announced the formation of the Missing and Murdered Unit that will focus on analyzing and solving missing and murdered cases. Why red? Red is the official color of the #MMIWG2S campaign, but it goes deeper and has significant value. In various tribes, red is known to be the only color a spirit sees. It is hoped that by wearing red, we can call back the missing spirits of our women, two-spirits, and children so we can lay them to rest. Why the hand print? It represents the voices who have been silenced. Our Sisters, Aunties, Mothers, Grandmas, friends, and loved ones will always be with us. #nomorestolensisters #mmiw #mmiwg #stoptheviolence #wearred Provided by @nativewomenswilderness Stats provided by @ennapaf (camera emoji) @jaylyn.gough (pin drop emoji) Stolen territories of Arapahoe, Ute, Cheyenne, and Shoshone Representatives: @jaylyn.gough @inyan1922 @nonookeiht_bee3eisei @linakrueck @barbiebuffalo @caliwolf @sasha2strong
