Closing of latest round of talks between Colombian government and FARC rebels

(22 Aug 2014) Another round of peace talks between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) leftist rebel group and the Colombian government ended on Friday, with no agreement on a bilateral ceasefire. A ceasefire has been a point of contention since the talks began in late 2013. The FARC has asked for one, but the government has refused. At a news conference in Cuba's capital Havana on Friday, Colombian government lead negotiator Humberto de la Calle said there would be no ceasefire. Recently there appeared to be some momentum towards a possible halt to the fighting, with the participation of a victims' delegation and the presence of a technical group from the Colombian military, which is supposed to offer a framework for a possible pause in the hostilities.
