Baltimore County police said the arrest an alleged serial rapist brings closure to five cases that date back to the 1970s. James Shipe Sr., 70, is in custody, held without bond, and police said investigators believe there could be more victims. Police said Shipe raped at least five women between 1978 and 1986 in Baltimore County. Authorities said evidence that tied Shipe to the crimes comes from the Greater Baltimore Medical Center's Slide Project. Starting in the 1970s, GBMC emergency physician Dr. Rudiger Breitenecker started preserving evidence from sex-assault survivors on microscope slides. He did that for decades until other methods to collect this evidence were created. Baltimore County police have been investigating the GBMC slides and said this is just one of the arrests they've made.
