Chris Bryant MP, replies to various questions from assembled Cypriots during the Association for Cypriot, Greek and Turkish Affairs Keith Kyle Memorial Lecture, 25th February 2010. "The one area I am confident there will be an agreement on is governance, that subject is one of the easiest, and there are others which are much more difficult" - if Britain were to try to use its influence on parties involved, it would simply unite everyone in hating the British, so it is for the UN and Alexander Downer to do that - wishes to encourage confidence building measures such as reopening the Limnitis checkpoint - build confidence through encouraging commmunity groups to have contacts - Turkey and the EU will indeed have an important role to play after a settlement is reached, to provide finance - Isolation of Turkish Cypriots is wrong. Britain and the EU have worked very hard to change that - it would be nice to have airports and ports being used, but it would also be very good to see the Ankara protocol fulfilled - the danger is that if the talks fail, people will want to resort to other means - the 2 leaders must be supported through an international culture of support, meetings must be intensified and there must be more of them - confidence building measures in the UK is something to be considered further - "I am not anti-Turk, and I'm not anti-Greek, I'm just pro-solution" - Sovereign bases in Cyprus are related to the Treaty of Establishment, not to the Treaty of Guarantee.
