Finland shares a lengthy border and a complicated history with next door Russia. Having been invaded by the Soviet Union in 1939, Finns have always taken the threat posed by their powerful neighbour seriously. A historically neutral nation, Putin’s war in Ukraine is testing their cautious stance on Russia and has dramatically shifted public opinion – and now for the first time, a majority of its citizens are demanding NATO membership.
