M/V Mark W. Barker unloading in Port Colborne

Interlake Steamship Company’s River-Class M/V Mark W. Barker unloading gypsum at the Snider Dock in Port Colborne. The 639-foot Mark W. Barker was built at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and is the first Great Lakes bulk carrier to be built on the lakes in more than 35 years. It’s also the first new build for Interlake since 1981. While it will ply the lakes and river systems it was designed to navigate the tight bends of the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, OH. The Mark W. Barker, named after Interlake’s president, was launched July 1, in service on July 27 and christened September 1. The Algoma Equinox, heading downbound on the Welland Canal, passes the Mark W. Barker.
