In September, our neighbor and arch-rival India attacked Lahore, Sialkot, and the desert region of Sindh. They possessed advanced weapons, tanks, and missiles. We lacked the advanced weapons that India possessed. Nonetheless, our soldiers "Defended" our country successfully. They shed their blood so that Pakistanis at the time, as well as our generation, could live in peace. If they had not defended Pakistan, our situation would have been similar to that of Srinagar. On September 6, 1965, the enemy invaded our borders with a view to breaching the assaulted areas. It’s been a response to stopping the Pakistani military advance in India Occupied Kashmir. They were mostly targeting the Lahore, Sialkot, and Sindh desert areas. The war continued until 22 September 1965, when both sides agreed on a ceasefire supervised by the United Nations. It is also a day to renew our pledge that we are a powerful, proud country, and that no foreign power, no matter how strong it is, can bully us. Our troops are a sign of all that and much more. It represents the Pakistani great nation’s fighting spirit, courage, and tactical acumen. Today we have freedom because our troops sacrificed their lives. With their blood, they defended our motherland. “It is true that a soldier does not fight because he despises what is in front of him. But he loves what is hidden behind his back, which is his country, people, and memories”. Major Raja Aziz Bhatti received the highest military award, the "Nishan-e-Haider," for his valor in the 1965 war. We can never fully thank them with our words or gestures. All we can do is respect our army, acknowledge their achievements, and keep pondering over our past so that we can become good citizens of a free country. It is never too late to honor martyrs and national heroes.
