Ecuador bids farewell to Paulina Tamayo, recognized as "La Grande del Ecuador," one of the most emblematic voices of national music. Her career began in Quito in the 1970s, inspired by broadcaster Jorge "Chino" Carrera, who gave her the nickname that would remain with her throughout her artistic career. Influenced by her parents, Tamayo consolidated a style that combined tradition and emotion, performing pasillos, sanjuanitos, boleros, waltzes, and mariachis. Her mother, María Luisa Ceballos, wrote several of her most memorable songs, including "Imploración de Amor" (Implication of Love) and "Fe Perdida" (Lost Faith). Throughout her career, more than five decades, Paulina Tamayo was a fixture at Quito festivals and on stages across the country.
