Police identify 2 officers killed in Innisfil shooting

Police north of Toronto have identified two officers who were killed in a shooting while responding to a disturbance call on Tuesday night. South Simcoe Police Service say Const. Devon Northup, 33, and Const. Morgan Russel, 54, responded to the fatal incident that occurred shortly before 8 p.m. at a home in the town of Innisfil. The statement says both officers were taken to a nearby hospital, where one died from their injuries. The second officer later died after he was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre in critical condition. Investigators say the suspect in the case is also dead, following an interaction with police. The Special Investigations Unit has been called in. Const. Northup was with the force for six years, working with the community mobilization and engagement unit. Northup also took part in the mental health crisis outreach team and the emergency response unit. CHCH News has learned the identity of the 23-year-old alleged suspect as Chris Doncaster. Doncaster was pronounced dead at the scene. Ontario’s police watchdog says an autopsy is to be conducted on Friday. The second officer who died, Const. Russel, was with the force for 33 years, working as a trained crisis negotiator and was assigned to uniform patrol. It is the second fatal shooting of an officer in one month. Toronto police Const. Andrew Hong was killed on Sept. 12 while on break at a Tim Hortons in Mississauga, Ont.
