7 Top Tips to Make Your Perfume Last Longer

Have you ever been in a situation where you apply perfume before a night out, and realise that way through the evening that you can no longer smell your perfume and nor can anyone else? Everyone wants a perfume that lasts so here are our Top 7 tips to make your favourite fragrance last longer. Tip 1. Layer your fragrance. Use shower gel and body lotion in the same scent and build layers finishing with your perfume. You can often find matching shower gels and body lotions in the same fragrance and some brands even go as far as producing matching underarm deodorant or body powder. Use them all and your scent will last for hours. Tip 2. Choose the strongest version of the fragrance that you can. Not all perfumes are created equal. At the bottom of the scale is an Eau Fraiche or Aftershave Splash. These typically contain only 2-4% of fragrance oils so are the weakest of the versions. Next is Eau de Toilette, typically containing 4-8% fragrance oils and then it's Eau de Parfum which contains 8-15%. Most people would consider EDP to be the strongest of the perfumes but there are 2 versions above it that are even stronger. Perfume (or pure parfum) contains 15 - 25% fragrance oils and finally comes Perfume extract and Solid perfumes contain 25% - 40% fragrance oils. Tip 3. Apply perfume to the pulse points. Coco Chanel once famously said you should apply perfume wherever you expect to be kissed. Pulse points are the area on your body where the blood flows closest to the surface of the skin. Therefore these tend to be the warmest part of the body and help diffuse the perfume into the atmosphere around you. Everyone knows that there are pulse points on your wrists, but did you also know that we have them on the inside of our elbows, behind our ears, on our throat, behind our knees, the groin area, the inside of the ankle and even in our belly button. Really, spritz in all these places and wherever you go you will leave a trail of perfume behind. Tip 4. Wear perfume on your hair. This tip comes with a caveat. Don't spray the perfume directly onto your hair as it contains alcohol which can dry your hair and make it brittle. Instead, spray your hairbrush with the perfume and then brush it through your hair. This will allow the alcohol to evaporate leaving only the fragrance oils behind. Tip 5. Prime your skin. Use an unscented oil or vaseline to moisturise the areas you are going to apply the perfume. This will slow down the evaporation process and help the perfume to last longer Tip 6. Store your perfumes correctly. There's nothing worse than a stale smelling perfume. Not only does it smell rancid it doesn't last as long either. Whilst it may be tempting to display all those lovely bottles on your dressing table the fact is that perfumes deteriorate when exposed to heat, light and air so keep the lids on, in the box and in a cool cupboard or drawer away from any heat source. This will ensure the longevity of the fragrance and slow down deterioration so your perfume will smell fresh for longer. Tip 7. Do not rub your perfume in. How many times have you seen people squirt perfume onto their wrists and then rub their wrists together? That is the wrong way to do it if you want the fragrance to last. Rubbing spreads the perfume around so makes it smell stronger initially but it also exposes a wider surface area so the molecules (and that's the bit you can smell) are released quicker so whilst it initially smells stronger that soon wears off to leave a weak smelling version behind. It's a hard habit to break but so worth it if you can. Usually, the more expensive the perfume is the longer it will last but that isn't always true.
