The Greatest Gift Exchange Luke 2:1-14 Christmas is a celebration of God’s greatest gift, Jesus. Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. The heart of the gift of Jesus is salvation from sin. Luke 2:11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. Matthew 1:20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” We need this gift because we have a sin problem. Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Jesus saves us from sin’s penalty - Justification Romans 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, Jesus saves us from from Sin’s Power - Sanctification Philippians 2:12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Jesus saves us from Sin’s Presence - Glorification Colossians 3:4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Christmas is the celebration of the greatest gift exchange. 2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. We gave Jesus our sin. 1 Peter 2:22 He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth. 1 John 3:5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Jesus gave us his righteousness. Romans 4:3 What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”4 Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. 5 However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.  Philippians 3:9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. Colossians 1:21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. Positional Righteousness and Practical Righteousness 1 Peter 2:24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” Have you exchanged gifts with Jesus? Give Jesus your sin and receive God’s righteousness.
