NEW DELHI, August 8, 2020—The Mahila Congress workers of Delhi, who protested and gheraoed the residence of the Delhi Chief Minister at Civil Lines, seeking justice for ‘Nanhi Pari’, who was subjected to brutal sexual assault at Peeragarhi in West Delhi recently, was detained by the Civil Lines police and treated them in an inhuman manner. Many women Congress workers suffered injuries as the cops treated them roughly and were detained at the Civil Lines police station for over two hours. The Mahila Congress workers wanted to meet Chief Minister Arvind, who used to incessantly talk about women’s safety and security, but called the police instead to forcibly remove the women Congress protestors. Though in the past one month two minors have been sexually assaulted in Delhi--the other assault happened at the high-security Covid care centre at Chhattarpur—CM Arvind has maintained a stony silence. Those who participated in the protest were: Ms Rinku, Neetu Verma Soin, Amrita Dhawan, Amar Lata Sangwan, Guddi Devi, Dr Sai Anamika, Pravina Sharma, Adv. Vineeta, Richi Bhargawa, Varyam Kaur, Pushpa Singh, Nikita Chaturvedi, Natasha Sharma and Priyanka Aggarwal. Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ch. Anil Kumar, condemning the police action against the women Congress workers, said that it was the same Arvind who had promised to setup CCTV cameras all across Delhi and appoint marshals at DTC buses for the safety and security of women, but he is now totally indifferent and unmoved by the sexual assaults on minors in the Capital. Instead, he used Amit Shah’s Delhi Police to misbehave with the women protestors and treat them roughly. Ch. Anil Kumar said that with CM Arvind rarely stepping out of his official residence, and the law and order situation in the Capital getting into a total mess, the lives of the people, particularly women, have become unsafe and a nightmare.
