This era began in Japan in 1992 with "Super Mario Kart" on the Super Nintendo (SNES). The idea of the development team around mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto: to create a fun racer like F-Zero, which can also be played with two people and which doesn't move as quickly. This led to karts, go-kart-like tracks and fun items like banana peels and turtle shells. The 3D simulation Mode 7 also gave the game an incredibly impressive look for the time. The player can race around the tracks with Mario, Luigi, Toad, Princess Peach, Bowser, Koopa, Yoshi & DK Jr. and choose between the Grand Prix mode consisting of 50cc, 100cc & 150cc, set the best times in the Time Trial or shoot items at each other with friends in the competition mode. The game may have aged a bit, but its devilishly high difficulty level means it's still captivating.
