Transcript: What is verb (ক্রিয়া)? Verb is the heart of a sentence. Every sentence must have at least one verb. The verb has been defined as a word that describes an action (কোনো কাজ) or state of being (হওয়া). • Action means doing something. Two types of actions. Physical action and mental action. • State of being means conditions or situations that exist. In this video two types of verbs has been discussed; 1. Principal verbs: Principal verbs are also called main verb or lexical verb. These verbs are not dependent on other verbs to give a complete sense in the sentence. Two types of principal or main verbs. a) Transitive verbs: These verbs require a direct object to make a complete sense. b) Intransitive verbs: These verbs do not require a direct object to make a complete sense. 2. Auxiliary verbs or helping verbs: Verbs which are used to help principal verb to form a complete sentence. Most of the auxiliary verbs are also used as principle verb. There are 24 auxiliary verbs in English grammar. Two types of auxiliary or helping verbs. a) Primary auxiliary verbs: In the absence of principle verbs these verbs act as a principal verb. There are 13 primary auxiliary verbs in English grammar. i) Be verbs: Am, is are, was, were, been and being. ii) Do verbs: Do, does and did. iii) Have verbs: Has, have and had b) Modal auxiliary verbs: These verbs show possibility, ability, willingness, permission, command, wish etc. in a sentence. There are 11 modal auxiliary verbs in English grammar. Can, could, may, might, must, need, ought, shall, should, will and would are modal auxiliary verbs.
