The bomb went off at 2 pm local time (1200 GMT) in the Sinak commercial district on the east side of the Tigris River. It went off near the Abdul-Qadir al-Gailani mosque, a Sunni shrine that is also revered by Shiites. Associated Press Television footage showed dozens of people at the scene of the Sinak explosion, inspecting the charred cars and debris that littered the scene. After shooting was heard at the site, people ran for cover behind U.S. troops that had arrived at the scene. Three traffic policemen were among the wounded and at least eight civilian cars were damaged in the busy market area, police said. The cleric in charge of the mosque said the blast had damaged the building's dome. AP Television pictures also showed damage to the minaret. In a separate attack on Monday afternoon six civilians were killed and more than a dozen were wounded as two mortar rounds slammed into a street in Karradah, a Shiite-dominated neighbourhood in downtown Baghdad, police said. One shell hit a house, while another exploded in a residential area near the national theatre, police said. The attack also caused damage to nearby shops.
