Close of policemen taking a detained protester away STORYLINE Thousands of protesters marched through central Berlin on Wednesday in a traditional May Day demonstration. The protest briefly turned violent, but the police quickly deployed hundreds of officers around the procession and brought the situation under control. Hooded demonstrators were seen smashing windows of a bank branch along the route of the protest. For the first time ever, the march was allowed to reach the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin's famous landmark, where protesters dispersed peacefully. Leftist May Day demonstrations have traditionally been marred by violence, but have become more peaceful in the recent years.
