Tokyo Electric Power Company - the operator of the problematic Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant - is determined to go ahead with the preparations for the discharge of contaminated wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear accident into the sea, Japan's state broadcaster NHK reported on Friday. Despite international condemnation and skepticism as well as domestic opposition, Tokyo Electric Power Company has planned to start a geological survey on Saturday to prepare for the construction of an undersea tunnel to drain the contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear disaster, according to the NHK. According to Tokyo Electric Power Company's plan, diluted contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant will be discharged into the Pacific Ocean through the one-kilometer undersea tunnel starting in the spring of 2023. About 1.3 million tons of contaminated water is stored at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, all in large tanks. The Japanese government decided in April to filter and dilute the contaminated water and release it into the sea. The move has sparked strong international concern and domestic opposition. In 2011, the cores of three reactors of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant melted down following a major earthquake and tsunami. Disregarding domestic and foreign questioning and criticism, the Japanese government has insisted on discharging the nuclear contaminated wastewater into the sea, which is expected to last 20 to 30 years, until the nuclear power plant is scrapped.
