KRBC News Weekend (A-Block), 11/7/2010

JOIN BROADCAST PLAZA TODAY, DISCORD'S MEDIA DISCUSSION COMMUNITY — http://bit.ly/S31MA Here's a full A-block of the 10pm newscast (delayed to around 10;43pm due to football) from the Mission Broadcasting-owned, Nexstar-operated NBC affiliate in Abilene, Texas, recorded on Sunday, November 7, 2010. Graphics were from the now-defunct VDO group (I believe this package was called "Icon" if I remember correctly, which was later updated for HD after WWLP commissioned an updated to it). Music was "The Rock" from Stephen Arnold Music, and Eric Gordon is the voiceover artist (he still is their VO to this day). KRBC has been the market's third-rated station since the 1980s and Nexstar (who owns usual #1 KTAB) has definitely prioritized KTAB over KRBC in their management of the duopoly as a result. KRBC just felt cheap and neglected at the time compared to how they treated KTAB. Nexstar was run cheaper back then than they are now (if you can believe that) and the duopoly felt technologically behind even for 2010 standards (they converted to HD production six years later, and 16:9 presentation in 2013). They also didn't have weekend meteorologists during this time, relying on their Lubbock sister stations to pre-tape weather ahead of time for Abilene (KTAB also did this). They were still on their 2001-era (it might be older) set and still had the duratrans from the Cinemagic package as the background. They later got a new (and their current) set when they went widescreen in 2013. This whole newscast was kind of odd, like they were trying to have a mix of feel-good stories and trying to be tabloid at the same time. In my opinion, it didn't really work. Anchored by Tim Johnston (later went to WKYT but has been out of news since 2014 and now works for the Texas Rangers Baseball Club) with weather from KLBK's Matt Laubhan (he was their chief but was working a Sunday night for some reason – he has been the chief meteorologist at WTVA in Tupelo for 11 years now). Includes reports from David Robinett (still there), Jessica Reyes (later went to WFXT in Boston but is now in PR), and Megan Dobbs (later became the duopoly's news director before leaving the industry in 2017; she's now working for Bally Sports Southwest as Marketing Director). Station promos and commercials were left intact.
