U.S. Revived Philippine Shipyard Industry NOW Capable of BUILDING its own Warships

The capability of the Philippine Navy, to build its own major warship vessels, may no longer be a far-fetched idea. In fact, it might happen next year. AS Philippines is now reclaiming its spots, as one of the biggest shipbuilders in the world. These were realized during the reopening of Subic Bay Shipyard. With the partnership of the Korean company giant - HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and to the U.S.-based private equity fund, Serverus Capital, supported by the Philippine Government, as Manila, revitalized the country shipbuilding industry. Since 2008, the Philippines notched 4th in the rank of the largest shipbuilding nations of the world following South Korea, China, and Japan; the country has covered 1.6% of the world’s ship production with more than a hundred ships produced per year and roughly 5900 gross tonnages overall. The Philippine Government has declared strong commitment in reviving the country’s once-thriving shipbuilding industry, underscoring a strategy to restore national competitiveness in one of the most capital- and labor-intensive industrial sectors. The reopening of the Subic Bay, particularly the shipbuilding capabilities, touted as one of Asia’s largest shipbuilding facilities, will boost Manila’s future capacity, in building its own major warship vessels.
