1. Catholic Prophecy: the coming chastisement.

Keep in mind when listening to these predictions that a human being is subject to deception. The Church is always very careful around such pronouncements precisely because they are capable of leading people astray. The true value of prophecy is to be found in the capacity it possesses for spurring people to take their faith more seriously. Not even a prophecy that comes from Almighty God must necessarily come true. Recall what happened to the prophet Jonah. He warned the Ninevites of a coming chastisement, but they did penance, and the punishment was averted. There is no set destiny. We are free to choose our fate, but God knows which one we will choose if left to our own devices, so He helps us to choose a better one. It is arguable that the Almighty can sometimes enlighten us on our possible destiny with the express purpose of helping us avoid it! Given the omniscience of His nature, it makes far more sense for our merciful God to give us the information necessary to avoid an evil fate rather than to simply inform us of future events. Nothing that is done by our benevolent, merciful all-knowing Father can be other than the fruit of the most perfect Charity. If you knew with utmost certainty that your child was about to hurt himself while riding a bicycle, would you not intervene forcefully to prevent it? It is in this light that we must heed prophecies.
