🫁 Taking Care of the Chest Tube Patient

Chest tubes can be used in different situations but they are usually used to remove air or some type of fluid from around the lungs. This air and fluid can prevent the lungs from fully expanding. This is what is commonly called a collapsed lung! Pneumothorax = Air around the lung Hemothorax = Blood around the lung Pleural Effusion = Fluid in and around the lung Empyema = Infectious drainage or purulent drainage around the lung When caring for these patients, be sure to assess your patient and chest tube thoroughly, check your orders for suction or not, and record accurate I/Os. Where is another place we might see a chest tube to drain fluid? Put your answer in the comments below!
