Tracking the Tropics: Tropical Depression Seven strengthens to Tropical Storm Fiona, aiming for Cari

We officially have our sixth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Fiona! Invest 96-L developed to Tropical Depression Seven on Wednesday morning, before strengthening to a tropical storm. The National Hurricane Center as of 9:45 p.m. Wednesday noted that satellite data had shown some strengthening with maximum sustained winds nearing 50 mph, allowing this depression to become named Tropical Storm Fiona. Fiona is about 645 miles east of the Leeward Islands and is moving to the west at 14 mph. Winds are sustained at 50 mph. Tropical Storm Fiona is forecast to maintain tropical storm strength as it nears the Leeward Islands by Friday as a tropical storm with winds around 45 mph. The track will eventually move this system toward Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands by the weekend.
