Senators debate impeachment, Syria

(24 Oct 2019) GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham, a top ally of President Donald Trump, is introducing a resolution condemning the Democratic-controlled House for pursuing its impeachment inquiry of the president. Graham announced the move Thursday and says the Senate's top Republican, Mitch McConnell, is a co-sponsor. Graham plans a Thursday afternoon news conference. The nonbinding resolution gives Senate Republicans a chance to show support for Trump at a moment when Trump is urging his GOP allies to get tougher and fight harder for him as the House impeachment probe gathers momentum. Graham said he's "disgusted" by the process. On Wednesday House Republicans, who are not assigned to the Committees conducting the impeachment inquiry, disrupted the proceedings by trying to enter a closed door deposition. They say the process is unfair. Yet Democrats like Senator Dick Durbin say that Republicans who are on the committees currently conducting the impeachment inquiry have had a chance to participate. At the same time, the senate is also debating the ramifications of the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria. Trump is defending his decision to withdraw about 1,000 American troops from Syria, largely abandoning the Syrian Kurdish fighters who battled IS alongside the U.S. for the last several years. Trump has declared victory, saying the move is saving lives, but it also cedes control of a large swath of the border to Turkey, Russia and the Syrian government.
