Ubisoft delayed its Avatar game to make it ‘perfect’ - Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is an upcoming open-world action-adventure video game based on James Cameron's Avatar film series. The game is being developed by Massive Entertainment and will be published by Ubisoft for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S in 2023 or 2024. Ubisoft has delayed Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora from a 2022 release window to sometime in 2023 or 2024, the company announced as part of its Q1 earnings on Thursday (pdf). The delay keeps up with something of a tradition for Avatar properties to get pushed. “We want to make [Avatar] a video game industry brand,” Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said on Thursday’s earnings call. “It is important for us that we come with something that is perfect.” The company first announced it was working on a new Avatar game in 2017, and it debuted the first trailer in 2021. It seems likely that Ubisoft’s plan was to release Frontiers of Pandora this year to coincide with the December debut of Avatar: The Way of Water, but now, we’ll be waiting until 2023 at the earliest to explore Pandora in Ubisoft’s game. In its earnings report, Ubisoft also said that it will reveal the “future of the Assassin’s Creed brand” in September and that it has pushed “a smaller unannounced premium game” that was set to be released in 2022 or 2023 to 2023 or 2024. Premise Players take control of the Na'vi and embark on a journey across the Western Frontier, a never before seen region of Pandora, and must push back the forces of the RDA, who seek to threaten it. Development The game was first announced in March 2017 when Massive announced that their next major title would be based on James Cameron's Avatar. In a 2021 investor call, it was revealed that the game was tentatively set to release between April 2022 and March 2023. The game was titled Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora with a trailer at E3 2021 and announced for a release in 2022. The game is set to tell a standalone story within the Avatar universe. The game was delayed in July 2022 from its initial 2022 release window to Fiscal Years 2023-24.
