Banks and cafes were also damaged during the disturbance. In March 2010, thousands of people took to the streets to protest against austerity measures announced by the Greek government, which included cutting civil servants'' pay and raising consumer taxes, to bring the budget deficit down as the country buckles under a national debt of 300 (b) billion euros (406 (b) billion US dollars). *** On May 2nd 2010 Greece outlined strict new austerity measures required by an international bailout and Germany there was a good chance it would approve its part of the euro-zone and International Monetary Fund (IMF) rescue before May 9th.
