Wide of people walking in street STORYLINE: South Korea said it will join a US-led initiative to stop the spread of weapons of mass destruction. The South Korean Foreign Ministry made the announcement on Tuesday, one day after the North defiantly carried out an underground nuclear test. Following the announcement, a small group of protesters staged a demonstration outside the South Korean Defence Ministry against the move, saying the decision might trigger a war inside the Korean peninsula. However other Seoul residents believed the move was necessary in order to control the shipment of nuclear devices into the North. The Proliferation Security Initiative, or PSI, which began in 2003, is aimed at deterring states such as North Korea and Iran from trade in missile and nuclear technology. North Korea has warned it would consider the South's full participation in the PSI as a declaration of war. South Korea had planned to join the programme following the North's April 9 rocket launch, but delayed the announcement after a surprise offer of a dialogue by the North.
