Massive Tornado and Giant Hail Storm Hits Illinois – Extreme Weather March 2026

On March 10–11, 2026, a powerful storm system moved across the U.S. Midwest, strongly affecting Illinois and neighboring Indiana. The most significant damage occurred in Kankakee County and near Aroma Park, where a strong tornado moved through residential areas and farmland, damaging houses, buildings, shops, and power lines while strong winds knocked down trees and scattered debris across roads. The storm also produced very large hail, with some hailstones reaching about 12–15 cm in diameter, damaging cars, roofs, and windows. Meteorologists reported at least four tornadoes in the region along with many reports of destructive winds and hail, leaving thousands of homes temporarily without electricity due to damaged power lines. Some people were injured and received medical assistance, while emergency services worked to clear roads, inspect damaged buildings, and help residents. The storm was part of a larger weather system affecting much of the central and eastern United States, caused by the collision of warm, moist air from the south with a cold front from the north, creating unstable atmospheric conditions and powerful supercell thunderstorms with tornadoes, strong winds, and large hail.
