Providing habitat for mason bees is fun and easy - a great way to ‘keep bees’ without all the intensive management. It is important to remember, however, that any time we create artificial habitats for wildlife, we are assuming some responsibility for the wildlife that occupy those spaces! Without proper management of our nesting sites, Houdini flies, parasitic wasps, pollen mites, and chalkbrood could decimate your habitat’s bee population in a matter of a couple of seasons. That’s why we harvest, sort, clean, and store our mason bee cocoons at the end of the season. Harvesting mason bee cocoons is super simple, and this video will guide you through the process step-by-step! We are educators and pollinator advocates in Portland, OR, empowering our community to support the environment and all of the pollinating critters within it! We promote native bee conservation and sustainable, bee-centric beekeeping through hands-on workshops and ecotourism experiences at our pollinator sanctuary on Sauvie Island.
