Approaching a traffic circle(roundabout) with a clear intention to make myself known to motorists and to make myself as predictable as possable, but that doesen't seem to stop some people from making stupid, illogical decisions, that endanger the lives of others, like this fool. No law written today says a bicyclist has to ride on the right side of the lane/road, or even in a bike lane or a paved shoulder. However, I do use the shoulder from Sylvania to just before I get to the roundabout on King and Brint. I always control the lane whenever I get a gap in traffic, and if I don’t have a gap, I will simply wait till traffic clears then merge into the middle of my lane to take control through the roundabout. I have every right to use the roads that my taxes pay for me to use, just like everyone else. I may control my lane at anytime it’s unsafe to be at the right, as per ORC 4511.55(C), and nothing says I have to compromise my safety to allow faster traffic to pass. Bicycles are legal vehicles and must follow all the laws just as motorists, like stopping at stop signs, yielding to pedestrians and stopping at red lights, and riding with traffic, and NEVER facing traffic. That will just invite a deadly collision. Here are some relevant laws. Note- These are just my quick explanations of the laws. You can read the official versions here http://www.codes.ohio.gov/orc/4511. ORC 4511.01(A) Bicycles are legally classified as vehicles. I am a driver. ORC 4511.55(A) Only requires to drive as far right as practicable(which means safe and reasonable), NOT as far right as possible. ORC 4511.55(C) Cyclists May use full lane ORC 4511.20 Willful or wanton disregard of the safety of persons ORC 2903.11 Felonious assault, only intent/attempt required even in lack of contact ORC 2903.22 Menacing, you only need to make me believe you mean harm ORC 4511.39 Only required to signal once, NOT continuously. Not required to signal in designated turn lanes or if both hands are needed for safe operation of my vehicles. ORC 4511.07 Local authorities can not ban cyclists from the roads ORC 4511.711 Local authorities may not require cyclists to use sidewalks ORC 4511.12 Cyclists must use turn lanes to turn, motorists CANNOT use turn lanes to pass ORC 4511.25(A) Crossing left of center is legal under certain conditions. (B) Slower traffic drives right except under certain conditions. (B)(2) Slower traffic is not required to compromise their safety to facilitate passing ORC 4511.22(A) I may slow down for the safe operations of my vehicle if I am being followed too closely. (C) Troutwood V Slez, if I’m doing a reasonable speed for a cyclist on a bicycle as a cyclist on a bicycle in the existing conditions then I cannot be considered as illegally impeding traffic. ORC 4511.43 & 431 Must stop prior to entering sidewalk/crosswalk(even if unmarked) at stops and driveways. ORC 4511.28 No passing on the right ORC 4511.27, 29, 30 & 31 All the requirements for crossing left of center when safe to pass to include the 3 foot clearance requirement. ORC 4511.712 Illegal to enter an intersection unless you can clear it safely. ORC 4511.70 Illegal to open door into moving traffic.
