Dahlia is member of the Asteraceae (or Compositae), dicotyledonous plants, related species include the sunflower, daisy, chrysanthemum, and zinnia. The dahlia was declared the national flower of Mexico in 1963. For centuries flowers have been used in many cultures as the symbolic representations of abstract concepts. They were first used as symbols in a religious context.
