The Holy Eucharist: Rite II on the Second Sunday after Pentecost, June 11, 2023 at 11 a.m., at Calvary Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh, PA. The Reverend Cameron J. Soulis, Associate Rector. was the preacher. Assisting: The Reverend Jonathon W. Jensen, Rector, The Reverend Neil K. Raman, Senior Associate Rector, The Reverend Geoffrey Royce, Deacon, Alan Lewis, Organist and Director of Music, Jon Tyillian, Assistant Organist. Musical Notes: We have entered “Summer Choir” season, and singers who would like to give a try to singing in the choir are welcome to join us for rehearsal on Sunday mornings at 10, prior to the 11 a.m. service. Today’s Postlude is a somewhat unusual piece among Bach’s organ works. It is based upon Martin Luther’s adaptation of a fourteenth-century melody for intoning the Nicene Creed—or, at least, upon the first phrase of that melody, whose rising-fifth opening becomes the principal motivic unit in the piece. Bach fashions a fugal subject out of that first phrase, and develops the fugue in three voices, played by the hands. Periodically the progress of the piece is punctuated by a brief ostinato—a climbing figure played by the feet and seemingly unrelated to the material of the fugue itself, continuing above. This figure earned the piece the moiker, The Giant Fugue, from some fanciful nineteenth-century commentator, a name pointing not to the dimensions of the piece, which is not particularly long, but to the way the ostinato suggests great footfalls treading through the midst of the music.
