Discover how to conquer anxiety, wake up happy, and enjoy life again. . . . I hadn't realized it but I was killing myself with taking the world so seriously. I was working all the time, looking at a screen for basically the entire day. I wasn't sleeping, I was drinking coffee all the time, and I was basically creating my own suffering. I wasn't around human beings enough face-to-face, having guilt free fun with them. The week I decided to start playing again a friend of mine introduced me to his buddy David via email and David replied to the email with the usual request which was "Hey, you want to grab coffee?" Because I was in a more playful state of mind I paused and I said, "Hey David, thanks for reaching out. Would you want to go play catch at the park? It's a lot more stimulating than sitting around and drinking caffeine and I haven't done that in a while!" And David's response was "Sure thing, that sounds like a f*ing blast! Let's do it!" I felt rejuvenated after I came back from that catch meeting, because both of us had removed the typical pressure that adults put on themselves in these nonsense business meetings where they are trying to impress each other and be serious and very adult-like. Instead we just got to enjoy our game on a nice summer day in the park. Having that guilt free fun where I just relaxed and played actually carried over throughout the rest of the day. I started making an effort each day to get outside and have fun with my friends. If you're dealing with anxiety or you're working around the clock it's super, super important for you to set aside time to play. What I would suggest is today, right now, you call up a friend and suggest something fun that both of you can do together. You can play catch, you can play a pick-up game, you can even just go on a long walk. Just as long as you do something for an extended period of time where you are not worried about work, you're not checking screens, and you're just having fun with your friends. Getting yourself around good people doing something fun and active really combats anxiety. And it gets you in a more playful state of mind, which is critical if you want to get over your own suffering. Play is a state of mind and it is a way for you to approach the world. Whether your world is a frightening prison or a loving playground is totally up to you.
