Pakistan students protest US ban on militant group

(30 Dec 2016) Dozens of activists from a student group rallied in Islamabad on Friday to condemn a recent US ban on their organisation. The protest came two days after the State Department termed Al-Muhammadia Students a "terrorist organisation". At the protest, Hafzala Ahmed, an activist from the group, said they were being maligned by Washington to appease India. He said they are not linked to militant, anti-India group Lashkar-e-Taiba, of which it has been said that Al-Muhammadia Students is a student wing. India blames Lashkar-e-Taiba for the 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai in which 166 people were killed. Pakistan has banned Lashkar-e-Taiba but its founder, Pakistani cleric Hafiz Saeed, still openly moves in the country. He often addresses rallies against India on the issue of Kashmir, which is divided between Pakistan and India and claimed by both.
