Manipur Clashes Continue: 23 Injured | Imphal | MEITEI | KUKI | N Biren Singh | PM Modi | Amit Shah

Tensions flared in Phougakchao, situated within Manipur's Bishnupur district. An incident unfolded on August 3 when security forces, clashed with a gathering of protestors in the area. The confrontation is said to have occurred due to the Kuki Civil Society Organisations unveiling plans for a mass burial of 35 deceased individuals at the Torbung Bangla sericulture farmland. The Manipur High Court had halted the burial order of the Kuki Zo community and then issued a directive to maintain the status quo at the intended burial site in Haolai Khopi village, Churachandpur district, and halted the planned burial till August 9th. The Indigenous Tribal Lieader’s Front (ITLF), a prominent tribal organization, announced that it will carry on with the burial despite that court's order. An apex community objected to the mass burial and said that would be provoking. Despite the objections, the burial was planned. Naturally, this added fuel to the already burning communal fire. Women from the ‘metei’ community protested and initiated a march. Around 11 am, this agitated mob attempted to breach the security forces' barricades, pelted stones at them and even looted their arms and ammunition. It started small but then it became a large one. It went on to such an extent that security forces had to resort to the use of tear gas and mock bombs to disperse the gathering, which resulted in injuries sustained by 23 individuals, including a journalist. The cause of this clash is said to be the Kuki Zo community’s desire to bury and respect their dead, which holds profound cultural and emotional significance for them. The events that led up to the clashes after this portray the complacency and sensitivity of the situation. The clash between the community's desire to honor their fallen and the legal constraints imposed by the high court show how tangled up the situation is in finding a resolution. In response to the unfolding situation, Manipur's local authorities took precautionary measures to ensure public safety. District magistrates of Imphal East and Imphal West revoked earlier relaxations on curfew, reimposing daytime restrictions in addition to the existing night curfew across the Imphal valley. This step aimed to prevent potential disruptions and maintain order amid rising tensions.
