(13 Feb 2011) HEADLINE: Egypt's military rulers dissolve parliament, suspend constitution CAPTION: Egypt's military leaders dissolved parliament and suspended the constitution Sunday, meeting two key demands of protesters who have been keeping up pressure for immediate steps to transition to democratic, civilian rule. (Feb. 13) EGYPT'S MILITARY LEADERS BOWED TO KEY DEMANDS OF PROTESTORS AND DISSOLVED PARLIAMENT AND SUSPENDED THE CONSTITUTION SUNDAY. PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS LAST YEAR WERE HEAVILY RIGGED. THE RULING COUNCIL SAID IT WILL RUN THE COUNTRY FOR SIX MONTHS, OR UNTIL PRESIDENTIAL AND PARLIAMENT ELECTIONS CAN BE HELD. (Arabic/ Ahmad Shafiq, Egypt Caretaker Prime Minister: "As it was stated in the resignation statement of President Mubarak, this interim government is a caretaking government and we are following up all matters with the Armed Forces Supreme Council.") PRIME MINISTER AHMAD SHAFIQ REITERATED THAT THE INTERIM GOVERNMENT IS A CARETAKER UNTIL ELECTIONS. (sot: Mohammad Chahine, Protester) "We do not want the army to take over. We want them just to stand guard as the people wait and demand from the army to execute our demands." BUT TO THOSE IN CAIRO'S TAHRIR SQUARE, THE MILITARY MOVES TWO DAYS AFTER PRESIDENT HOSNI MUBARAK STEPPED DOWN, THAT'S NOT ENOUGH. THOUGH THE NUMBER OF PROTESTORS WAS DOWN TO A FEW THOUSAND--COMPARED TO A QUARTER-OF-A-MILLION PEOPLE AT THE PEAK OF THE 18 DAYS OF DEMONSTRATIONS. THERE WERE SCUFFLES AS SOLDIERS AND MILITARY POLICE TOOK DOWN MAKESHIFT TENTS. SOME OF THE MEN IN THE SQUARE REFUSED TO LEAVE. (Arabic/ Ahmad Amin, protesting policeman: "We want to eradicate martial law, we need apartments like the officers, our salaries should be rectified, and we are working 12, 16 and 20 hour days so we need overtime." SEPARATELY, ABOUT TWO THOUSAND POLICE OFFICERS MARCHED TO THE INTERIOR MINISTRY, DEMANDING BETTER PAY AND CONDITIONS. THE POLICE HAVE LONG BEEN HATED FOR THEIR BRUTALITY AND CORRUPTION UNDER DECADES-OLD EMERGENCY LAWS. (Arabic/ Ahmad Amin, protesting policeman: "We want to eradicate martial law, we need apartments like the officers, our salaries should be rectified, and we are working 12, 16 and 20 hour days so we need overtime." MEANWHILE, LIFE IN CAIRO IS SLOWLY RETURNING TO NORMAL. BUT AT ONE ANALYST POINTED OUT, THE COUNTRY IS ON UNCHARTED LEGAL GROUND. APTN STORY NUMBER: 675568 SHOTLIST 1.
