Border control putting arrested illegal immigrants in truck STORYLINE: Hoping to give Republican candidates a pre-election platform for asserting they're tough on illegal immigration, US President George W Bush signed a bill on Thursday authorising 700 miles (1,126 kilometres) of new fencing along the US-Mexico border. At a White House signing ceremony, Bush said the "United States has not been in complete control of its borders for decades and...illegal immigration has been on the rise." He said lawmakers "have a responsibility to enforce" US laws and borders. And he said that responsibility needs to be taken seriously. The measure Bush put into law on Thursday authorises the fence - which would cover one-third of the 2,100 mile (3,380 kilometre) border - but offers no money for the project. The money also can be used for access roads, vehicle barriers, high-tech equipment and other tools to secure the border. They'll be sent back to Mexico within days.
