The World's Richest Person Died on The Titanic | John Astor John Jacob Astor was the richest person aboard the Titanic ship when it sank and the world’s richest man in American history at the time he went down in the most famous ship. John’s fortune was reportedly worth about $90 to $150 million when he boarded the Titanic. If converted to today’s value, it would be worth between $2.6 and $4.5 billion. He was a member of the famous Astor Family–one of the world’s richest families at the time. His son, Vincent then traveled to Halifax to claim his. At that time, among the 333 bodies recovered, 116 were buried at the sea. John’s pregnant wife survived the shipwreck.
