During the Oval Office meeting, Trump repeated his vision of Canada as the 51st US state and made clear that he did not want to lift tariffs on Canadian imports, even as he repeatedly emphasised the "friendly" nature of the meeting. Canada joins China as the only countries to impose retaliatory tariffs on the US, which accounts for roughly 75 per cent of Canadian trade. As Trump reiterated his desire for Canada to become part of the US, Carney responded by saying that Canada was “never for sale”.
