Presider: Fr. Justin Lopina Parish: Sacred Heart and Saint Matthew Choir: Heart of the Nation TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy gospel according to John. Glory to you o Lord. Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves as well as the money changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, "Take these out of here, and stop making my father's house a marketplace." His disciples recalled the words of scripture, zeal for your house will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, "What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up." The Jews said, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?" But he was speaking about the temple of his body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. While he was in Jerusalem for the Passover feast, many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all, and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ This Sunday we encounter Jesus in a very strong passionate way. So he goes into the temple and he turns over the money changer tables and he tells them get out of this temple. Why? Because they were cheating people. They were doing it for themselves. Their own self gain. They were selling and they were using people. With the first reading we hear about the powerful 10 commandments which totally go against that. The 10 commandments are to respect one another. To show honor for God and for one another and that's what he was doing. He was changing and turning over their lives to say, we need to change. You need to change your ways and stop using and abusing people. And so he invites each and every one of us during this season of lent to change our lives to realize, you know what? We need to live in good relationship with God and with one another and that means that we need to turn over. To change to release to let go what we may do to one another and also to God as we reflect upon these readings today it gives us a moment to really reflect upon what needs to change in our lives Jesus is strong with us. He's saying I want you to change. I don't want you to stay and to disobey God and misuse God's temple. And I want to call attention to God's temple. God has created us all in his image. This body this person. Our personhood is God's temple we need to respect that temple. Bring honor to that temple and during lent it gives us an opportunity to do such thing. So I'm inviting you as Jesus changed and turned over those tables, he's turning over our lives to make a change. To respect the temple that God exists in. That God calls us to a deep relationship with one another and with him. As we continue this celebration I want you to realize change needs to take place that's what this season is about so let us be courageous and hear Jesus' voice and make that change.
