Peres made his comments in Jerusalem's King David Hotel where he was meeting with a delegation from the European Union. The Israeli Foreign Minister said Israel has told the Palestinian Authority that it would withdraw "immediately" from Jenin and Nablus if they took control of the towns that Peres called centres of terrorist activity. Meanwhile in Jericho, senior Palestinian peace negotiator Sa'ab Erekat said that diplomatic contacts were still taking place between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Erekat said both the Israeli and Palestinian leaders were aware that discussions were taking place. He added that it was important for both sides to return to the negotiating table. On Tuesday evening in Ramallah, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat met with Lord Levy, British Prime Minister Tony Blair's special envoy to the region. Lord Levy would not comment after the meeting until he had relayed details of the talks to London.
