Review of the $5 wok from Walmart

Review of the $5 wok from Walmart

Walmart sells a wok for $5 under their house brand Mainstsay. In this video, I decided to review this $5 wok and tested it under different situation froms frying an egg to make 1 lb of spaghetti noodles. I also used this wok to make a ham fried rice, a shrimp and salmon stir-fry, a beef and peppers in a black bean sauce, and a vegetable medley with five different kinds of vegetables. The wok is the right size at a diameter of 13.75 in across the top and flat bottom. It is sturdy and well constructed with carbon steel. It has a non-stick coating, which is the problem. The non-stick surface does not work well during stir-fry under condition of high temperature and constant stirring. After just a few cooking episodes, some of the non-stick coating starts to peel. For this reason, I would not recommend this wok. If you are going to take stir-fry seriously, I would recommend two slightly more expensive woks, either a carbon steel wok or a light cast iron, which are sold in Walmart right next to this $5 wok. You should take a look at my Wok Module playlist (   • Playlist  ) to learn more about woks and my reasons for recommendation woks without non-sticking coating.
