An amateur fossil enthusiast recently found a 25-million-year-old shark tooth that is not fictional. He found it in a rock while walking along Victoria’s Surf Coast in South Australia. The tooth belonged to an extinct species of sharks called the Great Jagged Narrow-Toothed Shark, which stalked Australia’s oceans, feasting on small whales and penguins. Fortunately for these animals, that giant shark does not exist anymore. The size of this shark might have been impressive. It was able to grow up to about 30 feet long, which is almost a double size of its distant relative, the great white shark. Just a small tooth of it can give you an idea of its full size. The teeth that were discovered on the beach are about 2.75 inches in length. In 200 years, scientists have found more than 40 teeth of ancient sharks that have contributed to study the ancestors of this sea animal that could have frightened humans in the past even a lot more than at the present time. The teeth of the sharks are the only part of their body that fossilizes. Therefore, this kind of discovery provides a great opportunity for scientists to learn more about ancient types of sharks.
