As reports swirl from sources in the US Intelligence community that China vastly underreported the number of COVID-19 cases and related deaths, China’s top diplomat in the United States, Ambassador Cui Tiankai, joined Ian Bremmer for an exclusive conversation on GZERO World. “For the accusations that China is hiding the numbers, just think about it. We have such a huge population, such a big country, you cannot hide the cases with such a very vicious virus. Because if you have patients, they are just patients. If people are infected, they're just infected, how can you hide them?” Cui told Bremmer. Cui Tiankai says there is a lack of global coordination in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. While he praises international agencies like the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Monetary Fund (IMF), Ambassador Cui believes more needs to be done and for a wider swath of impacted nations. China, he says, is poised and ready to lead in aid and relief efforts on a global stage, and he urges the US to also do its part. Ambassador Cui discusses his nation’s decision to expel reporters from major publications like The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, saying it was in retaliation for similar treatment of Chinese journalists in America. Ian Bremmer then asks him if the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated already strained China/US relations. As China begins the long road to recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ambassador Cui tells Ian Bremmer that his nation is beginning to restart the economy and return the supply chain to full capacity, but admits they aren’t there yet. He discusses the potential impact this will have on the US/China trade deal.
