Overwhelmed hospitals in Haiti after earthquake

(16 Aug 2021) The death toll from the earthquake that struck Haiti over the weekend has risen to 1,419, authorities said Monday. Some 6,000 people were injured. Casualties continued to stream into a hospital in the town of Les Cayes on Monday. Health facilities were overwhelmed, with patients forced to wait for treatment in corridors and on the veranda. Doctors said they were running short of pain killers and steel pins to mend fractures. Some patients were treated in the open air, laid out in beds and mattresses on the hospital veranda, hooked up to intravenous bags of saline fluid. Officials said more than 7,000 homes were destroyed and nearly 5,000 damaged from the quake, leaving some 30,000 families homeless. Hospitals, schools, offices and churches also were destroyed or badly damaged. #Haiti #earthquake #quake Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter:   / ap_archive   Facebook:   / aparchives    Instagram:   / apnews   You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
