The clashes subsided for a couple of hours around dawn before spiralling out of control again in the morning, as fighters from the Sunni-dominated Bab al-Tabbaneh district of the city fought fighters from the Alawite-majority Jabal Mohsen district, using rockets and other heavy weapons. The Lebanese army was seen patrolling the streets in armoured personnel carriers as the fighting continued. The battles raised the six-day death toll to 24 and fed fears of the Syrian civil war spreading to Lebanon and other neighbouring countries. Lebanon has been on edge since the uprising in Syria began in March 2011. This week's fighting in Tripoli has been linked to a Syrian regime offensive against the rebel-held city of al-Qusair in western Syria that has included Hezbollah fighters supporting Syrian troops against the rebels. Tripoli is a majority Sunni city and mostly supports the Syrian opposition, but it also has an Alawite minority and street fights between Sunni and Alawite gunmen have erupted several times since the uprising began.
