#GuitarSolo #GuitarLesson #TablaTutorial #VanHalen #EddieVanHalen Van Halen today! This is the guitar solo from Eddie's masterpiece "Somebody Get Me A Doctor", one of my fave tracks from his second album Van Halen II. I already made the video of this guitar solo just because I love it (check out my playlist "Guitar Solos", there are a lot of solos I love) but once I have this video I made this transcription for you! I have three things to highlight for this solo! 1) In bars 2, 4 and 6 there's a volume swell: on the AND of 3 there's a C5 chord on the 5th fret with a volume swell symbol on it, right between the TAB and the score (it's like an angle, like the mathematical symbol for less). What you need to do is quickly close the entire volume pot after playing the A5 chord at the beginning of the bar then play the next chord at the 5th fret with the volume still closed, in advance, and quickly open the volume back up in time. 2) The economy picking in bars 10 and 12: as you can see from the Guitar Pro file that I leave you in the download links, in these bars there are some sweep picking! It's not about executing sweeps in sequence with a regular rhythmic division (for example as in many pieces by Jason Becker or Vinnie Moore) but a sort of economy picking across the strings to perform a short sequence with one note per string, a thing that many old guitarists used to do. You have to focalize the notes of the short sequence than rush the pick into the same strings in the same direction to quickly play them! 3) The timing of the fast line in bars 11 and 12! The whole line starting on the 3 of bar 11 is written in 16ths triplets because this is the division, but the rhythmic effect is different! It is best to interpret the part as a four-note ostinato to be repeated at a faster bpm, like playing groups of 4 notes with a downstroke accent on the A at the 10th fret in a typical 16ths binary division, repeat it 5 times than rush one of the economy picking of point 2), accelerating to make 6 groups fit in 4 quarters! This creates a rhythmic outside effect. I'm pretty sure Eddie did't think at all of this but made it instinctively! Good luck!
