The first phase of voting for Assembly Elections in West Bengal and Assam underway amid tight security. While 47 seats go to polls in Assam today, elections will be conducted in 30 constituencies in West Bengal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged people to come out in large numbers and exercise their franchise as voting began in Assam and West Bengal. Voters were seen queued up in several areas amid fear of violence in some sensitive zones. While over 1.54 crore voters are prepped up to decide the fate of key candidates, 730 companies of paramilitary forces in Bengal are ready to avoid any untoward incident during the first phase of elections. The eastern states of West Bengal and Assam will decide whether the former Naxal-affected ‘Junglemahal’ area of Bengal will transfer its loyalty to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Polling in 30 assembly segments in West Bengal, most of which are in Junglemahal region, will be almost a straight fight between the BJP and ruling TMC. The saffron party feels it has the upper hand in the area as it had managed to win most of the Parliamentary seats in the region in the 2019 general elections. According to information, a company of 92 paramilitary forces personnel will be deployed in Bankura, 144 in Jhargram, 139 in West Midnapore, 169 in East Midnapore and 186 in Purulia. The officers will guard 10,288 polling booths housed in 7,061 premises. Besides, the state police will also be deployed at strategic locations. Another 14 companies of central forces will be used as Quick Response Teams (QRTs), one company for the maintenance of strong room and another two companies will be kept reserved as district and sub-divisional striking force, an Election Commission official said. #AssemblyElections2021 #WestBengal #Assam Subscribe our channel for latest news updates: http://bit.ly/2KGXvAW #GetCloserToTheNews with latest headlines on politics, sports and entertainment on https://bit.ly/2Y4QccL To stay updated on-the-go, download the News18 App: • Google Play Store: http://bit.ly/2VcRTRc • Apple App Store: https://apple.co/2JceAmY Follow us for latest news, photos & videos: • Facebook: http://bit.ly/2vOO22u • Twitter: http://bit.ly/2HdNKch • Instagram: http://bit.ly/2PRgfiz .
