SPRINGFIELD -- A deadly accident involving a Springfield police officer and a pedestrian is under investigation. The crash happened around 10:45 Sunday night. We are told the Springfield officer was driving on Lagonda Avenue when Steven Rintamaki, 45, was hit. The officer then called in for backup and tried to give CPR but Rintamaki died at the scene. The Ohio State Highway Patrol has been called in to investigate the crash. It is not clear what caused the crash. There are sidewalks on either side of the street. The officer was taken to the hospital for some minor injuries. "Anytime someone chooses to cross the roadway in an area not designated for foot traffic is not only illegal ... but extremely hazardous," Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Brian Aller said.
