Food distributed to migrants at Lesbos camp

(11 Sep 2020) A second fire in Greece's notoriously overcrowded Moria refugee camp destroyed nearly everything that had been spared in the original blaze, leaving thousands more people in need of emergency housing. The second fire left people waiting for food distribution, while others began fashioning shelters by tying what appeared to be corn or sugarcane stalks together with plastic bags on Friday. Conditions in the camp appeared calm and peaceful even as police buses rolled through and officers stood guard. Wednesday night's fires broke out inside the parts of Moria camp that had not burned in the first blaze, sending people streaming from the camp with their belongings, according to an Associated Press photographer in the area. Some 400 unaccompanied children from the camp were flown to shelters in northern Greece, while other migrants will remain on Lesbos and be put in emergency accommodations, a government spokesperson said Thursday. A ferry and two navy ships will be used as part of the emergency housing, government officials said. In the meantime, thousands of camp residents were sleeping rough on a roadside near the gutted camp. The fires caused no injuries, but they renewed criticism of Europe's migration policy. Authorities said the fires were started deliberately on Tuesday and Wednesday nights by residents protesting their confinement at the overcrowded Moria camp. The camp that housed 12,500 people was locked down due to a COVID-19 outbreak this month.
